House and Senate Successfully Override Gov. Stein’s Vetoes, With Eight Bills Now Law

Some scoffed at the time but when Speaker Destin Hall told the press he had a “working supermajority,” he wasn’t kidding.

Earlier this month we covered some of the bills vetoed by Gov. Josh Stein, which you can read about here and here. Gov. Stein’s vetoes stand in stark contrast to the forward thinking agenda championed by conservative leadership at the North Carolina General Assembly.

Legislators in both the House and Senate reconvened this morning for votes on overriding many of Gov. Stein’s vetoes, with 8 of the 14 being successfully overridden today. The eight that passed both chambers:

House Bill 193 – Firearm Law Revisions

House Bill 318 – The Criminal Illegal Alien Enforcement Act

House Bill 402 – The REINS Act

House Bill 549 – Clarify Powers of State Auditor

House Bill 805 – Prevent Sexual Exploitation/Women Minors

Senate Bill 254 – Charter School Changes

Senate Bill 266 – The Power Bill Reduction Act

Senate Bill 416: Personal Privacy Protection Act

Four other Senate bills were overridden in the Senate but have yet to be taken up in the House:

Senate Bill 50: Freedom to Carry NC

Senate Bill 153: North Carolina Border Protection Act

Senate Bill 227: Eliminating “DEI” in Public Education

Senate Bill 558: Eliminating “DEI” in Public Higher Ed

Two House bills vetoed by Stein have yet to be taken up by the House:

House Bill 96 – Expedited Removal of Unauthorized Persons. While this bill was not taken up in the House, a revised version of the bill was added to Senate Bill 55 did pass the House on a 110-8 vote.

House Bill 171 – Equality in State Agencies/Prohibition on DEI
