On April 8, the House unanimously passed House Bill 227, which prohibits state agencies, counties, cities, and any other subdivisions of the state from using public funds to purchase flags of the United States or the State of North Carolina unless the flag is entirely manufactured in the United States using articles, materials, and supplies grown and manufactured within the country.
Current law in North Carolina outlines several preferences for products and citizens, including those manufactured by State agencies and those made in the United States. However, there are no specific laws that apply to flag purchases.
The bill, sponsored by Reps. Ed Goodwin, Allen Chesser, Dennis Riddell, and Charles Smith, would become effective on October 1, 2025, and apply to purchases made after that date. It now awaits consideration in the state Senate.
