After the gruesome and preventable murder of Iryna Zarutska, the General Assembly passed Iryna’s Law to make sure that repeat violent offenders are not released early. The effort modified the conditions for pretrial release, eliminating cashless bail for repeat offenders to walk the streets.

In late July a video of a man assaulting a woman on a sidewalk in Charlotte gained national attention. DiQuan Hunt, the man believed to be the assailant in the video, was arrested on August 6th, 2026. According to a press release from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department he was first taken to a local medical facility for treatment before being transferred to the custody of Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office on August 14th and charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

According to WSOC, prosecutors argued that Iryna’s Law was enacted for cases such as Hunt’s. Judge Roderick Davis agreed, and denied bond for Hunt. Hunt has a lengthy criminal history, with nine arrests since 2023 including multiple charges for assault.

Following his August 6th arrest, Hunt was also charged for an incident on July 3rd, 2026 where surveillance footage shows a person believed to be Hunt breaking into a storage facility. According to an affidavit, when footage of the July 30th attack began circulating online, the suspect was identified as Hunt after comparing images from the two incidents.

Hunt’s next hearing is scheduled for September 2nd, 2026.
