School Choice advocate Corey DeAngelis shared a series of videos on X of an administrator at UNC Charlotte named Janique Saunders bragging about continuing to push DEI despite it being banned. Saunders is the Assistant Director of Leadership & Community Engagement at UNC Charlotte.
In one video shared by DeAngelis, Saunders says that while DEI positions may not exist, she still finds opportunities to do “work that is covert.”
After talking to Saunders, the undercover journalist spoke to UNC Charlotte Provost Jennifer Troyer, who started walking away instead of answering questions about Saunders’ comments.
Accuracy in Media posted the full video on their YouTube, which you can view here.
The House passed legislation this year banning DEI in State Agencies and the Senate passed legislation banning DEI in public education. The House’s budget passed last week includes cuts to DEI funding in higher education. This is on the heels of President Trump issuing an executive order in January ending DEI in public schools. Last summer the UNC Board of Governors repealed and replaced language implementing DEI in the UNC system, and gave guidance to UNC System schools to close DEI offices and programs.
